Top Places to Visit in Rome
Rome is the capital of Italy and also the most popular tourist attraction in the country. The city is filled with an enormous number of churches, monuments and squares. Some of the most ancient and famous attractions world wide are scattered throughout the city. For every visit to Rome, you will be able to experience something completely new. Hotels are widely available throughout the city, so you can choose which places to visit depending on which hotel you are staying at. 1. The Colosseum – The largest and most recognizable amphitheater ever erected within the Roman Empire. Built around 70 AD with a capacity of 50,000 spectators, it served as a venue for gladiatorial contests, animal hunts, re-enactments of famous battles and mock sea battles.
2. St Peter’s Basilica – A Late Renaissance church located in the heart of the Vatican City. It is believed that below the altar of the basilica lies Saint Peter, who was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus.
3.Trevi Fountain – Also known as the Fontana di Trevi, is one of many large fountains in the city but considered to be one of the most beautiful and elegant. The fountain faces the Palazzo Poli, making this one of the most popular squares in Rome. Trevi Fountain is the final part of an aqueduct built in 19 BC by the name of Aqua Virgo. Also facing the fountain are a number of hotels. Having a grand view of this fountain from your hotel window would truly be breathtaking.
4. The Pantheon – This temple, dedicated to all of the gods of Ancient Rome, is one of the best preserved pieces of architecture from the ancient Roman times. After over two thousand years, the Pantheon’s dome is still the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome.
5. Spanish Steps – Also known as Scalinata della Trinità dei Monti are the widest steps in Europe, consisting of one hundred and thirty steps. Surrounded by some of the city’s most prominent landmarks, the Spanish Steps are located in the heart of historic Rome.
