Great sporting events
FIFA World Cup
The FIFA World Cup is normally just referred to as the World Cup, particularly from big football fans. This is the single, most prestigious international football competition in the world, and means a lot to players and fans alike. This is also often a period when non-football fans will get behind their country due to being swept up in the wave of patriotism. There have been 19 World Cups to date, with only eight different countries laying claim to victory. Brazil are the only team to have played in every tournament, and have won the most times (five). Brazil will also be the next country to host the competition in 2014.
Summer Olympic Games
The Summer Olympic Games are organised by the International Olympic Committee and occur every four years. The event is an international multi-sport competition in which countries goes to head-to-head in various sporting disciplines. There are 3 medals awarded in each event – 1st place gets gold, 2nd gets silver and 3rd gets bronze. Over time, the Olympics have grown from hosting 42 events to 300 events. The USA has hosted the competition the most times, with four tournaments under its belt. London will be hosting the 2012 games, which will be the 3rd time the competition has taken place in the UK. London will be the first city to host the games 3 times.
Superbowl
The Superbowl is one of the biggest sporting events in the world. Most Americans would probably argue that is the single most important sporting event. The Superbowl is an annual event of the NFL, in the USA. The first Superbowl took place in 1967, and since then each competition is named by roman numerals as opposed to the year in which it is played. The day of the Superbowl is almost considered a national holiday in the States, as it is that popular. Commercial airtime during the event is extremely expensive, due to the event attracting the most viewers for any single broadcast of American television. Mainstream musicians and pop artists often perform at the halftime ceremonies, which have become an integral part of the spectacle over time.
Make sure when visiting these great events that you have a credit card to gain airmiles while travelling to the event destinations.
